Fatima - Silver Coast - Portugal

Yesterday was the 94th anniversary of The Miracle of the Sun, an incredible occurrence that took place right here on the Silver Coast in the town of Fatima. The most striking thing about this astonishing story is the fact that unlike many of the myths and legends that are remembered in Portugal this particular event took place relatively recently and was well documented at the time.

In the spring of 1917 three children from the village of Fatima were watching their sheep in a field when they witnessed a vision of the Virgin Mary – known to them as Our Lady of the Rosary. She told them to pray and do penance and gave them information and predictions that were taken very seriously by the Catholic Church.

The vision reappeared on the 13th day of the following six months, and with the church and press taking an interest word soon spread. Proof was sought that this was indeed a true a miracle and at the children’s request the beautiful lady who appeared before them promised that on her final appearance on October 13th she would prove that they had been telling the truth.

People travelled from all over the Silver Coast to be present in the field near Fatima to witness the expected miracle – and they weren’t disappointed. The reports of the day’s events prove that the crowd, which numbered 70,000, saw the sky light up and the sun do a spectacular dance. There is even moving photographic evidence to prove it.

Fatima is now a thriving town with a magnificent Basilica built on the site of the miracle and huge number of pilgrims visit all through the year.

This Silver Coast miracle will never be forgotten.

Café culture is big in Portugal - this is the perfect place in which to while away hours at a time sitting at a table in a shady spot admiring the view or simply people watching. The town of Lourinha sits quietly on Portugal’s Silver Coast about 65 kilometres south of the capital. While generally considered to be an unassuming town Lourinha is a place full of surprises and well worth a visit during your holiday in Portugal.

The most notable thing about Lourinha is the relatively recent discovery of dinosaur remains that have lead to the region being dubbed Portugal’s Jurassic Coast. The finds include a collection of eggs, complete with embryos, the oldest dinosaur eggs in the world and unique in Europe. The complete skeleton of a brand new species of dinosaur was also discovered in the area and subsequently named Lourinhanosaurus Antunesi.

Other than dinosaurs, Lourinha is also a great place to visit if you like the beach, the coastline boasts a number of excellent beaches including Areia Branca, one of the best known on the Silver Coast. This popular beach is sandy and sheltered and safe for swimming. There is also a great selection of restaurants that line the beach allowing you to enjoy lunch or an early dinner without having to leave the beach. The nightlife along the beach is pretty lively throughout the summer months too!

We are enjoying a fabulous Indian summer here on the Silver Coast of Portugal, with record breaking temperatures and plenty of sunshine - it is more like the middle of August rather than October.

Everyone is making the most of the extended summer weather and spending as much time as they can on the beach. Most of the Silver Coast beaches will be particularly busy today as it is a public holiday. The holiday is to commemorate the first revolution that took place in Portugal on the 5th October 1910 when the Portuguese Royal family were over thrown in a coup d'état.

The term ‘Indian Summer’ is American and dates back to the late 18th century. There are various thoughts as to it’s exact origin but they all agree that it comes from the days of the wild west when Indians would use a break in the cold snowy weather to launch their raiding parties ensuring their tracks would not be spotted in the snow.

The Silver Coast of Portugal is a beautiful holiday destination, with plenty of fabulous golden beaches, pretty fishing villages, historic towns and acres of beautiful unspoilt countryside – all of this just waiting for you to explore.

Exploring can of course be a hungry business, so don’t forget to pack up a picnic before you set off. There are plenty of delightful places to stop and enjoy your picnic lunch with a number of designated picnic areas - known here as Parques da Merendas – throughout the Silver Coast.

These picnic areas are often in a woodland setting beside the road offering shade and plenty of room to park your car. The size of the picnic area might vary but there will always be tables and benches and usually water and litter bins too.

It is also not uncommon to find a barbecue that is available to anyone who would like to use it – this is a great way to make friends as you stand next to the fire prodding your own particular piece of meat!

If you are in a forest you can freely gather wood for your barbecue and perhaps some pine cones to get it going. Pine cones make absolutely perfect firelighters and are frequently used in Portugal. They are even sold in bags in supermarkets specifically for this purpose!

So whether you plan a simple sandwich or a lavish barbecue you can set off on your adventure safe in the knowledge that you will find a perfect picnic spot on the Silver Coast.

Obidos at Night

Enjoying a night out during your holiday in Portugal is easy if you pick the Silver Coast. The Portuguese love their night life and the choice of things to do is endless. One of my favourite night’s out here in Portugal took place a few years ago, before I came to live permanently on the Silver Coast. It was during a holiday with a group of friends and we all agreed that the night was just about perfect.

We started by enjoying a simple but beautifully prepared dinner in the local village restaurant close to our holiday villa. The friendly owners were very generous with both the food and the wine which really set us up for a big night out.

Next stop was Obidos. This picturesque Medieval town is a jewel on the Silver Coast and is well known for hosting festivals with a wide range of themes. The Arabian Festival that was taking place throughout the town lent an exotic feel to the pretty cobbled streets. We enjoyed the street theatre and searched the appropriately themed market stalls for trinkets and souvenirs before stopping at a café for a cocktail.

Then it was time to move on for the main event of the evening – The Green Hill Night Club on the hill beside the Obidos Lagoon. This sprawling night club is one of the best on the Silver Coast and is incredibly popular with both locals and visitors. Once inside we explored the various areas and after an hour or two on the dance floor found a relaxing garden with pretty lighting and comfy chairs, which by then was just what we needed.

Finally, when we all agreed that the evening should come to an end we drove back to our village near Obidos thinking of our beds. However, finding a café in the village still very much open we embarked on phase four of the evening - someone brought out a guitar, the landlord brought out the wine and we started all over again!

There is no denying that the Portuguese know how to have a good time, so book one of our package holidays in Portugal and come and join the fun.

Body Boarding in Portugal

If you fancy a go at surfing during your holiday in Portugal, but are not too confident about riding the gigantic waves some of the surfing beaches are so proud of then why not start with a spot of body boarding instead? Body boarding, or boogie boarding as it is sometimes known, is a great way to experience the thrill of surfing but so much easier if you are inexperienced as you lie on your board instead of balancing precariously on your feet.

The Silver Coast has a number of excellent beaches including the beach at Foz do Arelho which is a great choice for surfers of all abilities and a good place to try out some body boarding. All you need is a board (body boarders use a small rectangular piece of Hydrodynamic foam) which can be bought from many of the shops in Foz do Arelho, or indeed any of the other Silver Coast towns for that matter, and maybe a pair of flippers to make it easier to paddle out to where the waves start to break.

Body boarding as a sport started in earnest in the 1970’s but it is documented that is was popular as far back as the 18th century when flat wooden boards were used.

The Monastery, Alcobaca, Portugal

The historic Silver Coast town of Alcobaca is a fascinating place to visit during your holiday in Portugal. The pretty town situated on the convergence of two rivers, the Alcoa and the Baca, has evolved over centuries into the thriving market town it is today.

Alcobaca is dominated by the fabulous monastery, designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The monastery was founded by the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques in the 12th century to commemorate the victory over the Moors at nearby Santarem and is a fascinating glimpse of social as well as religious history with beautifully preserved features such as the kitchens where the monks prepared their meals.

The monastery is the subject of many well known legends told throughout Portugal, the most famous of which is that of the love story of Pedro and Ines both of whom are laid to rest in the monastery and celebrated by magnificent Gothic tombs which can be admired by modern day visitors.

However, there is more to Alcobaca than simply a monastery. On the outskirts of the town there is a huge market every Monday morning which is great fun to walk around, even if you don’t actually need any farm implements or live chickens!

The town is also a great place to enjoy an evening stroll through the cobbled streets and boasts an excellent choice of restaurants where diners can experience some traditional Portuguese cuisine in a warm friendly atmosphere.

We had a day out on the Silver Coast yesterday to celebrate the end of the school summer holidays here in Portugal and after exploring some of the beautiful beaches around Peniche we decided to head inland. We were in search of an enchanting garden that up until then I had only read about.

The Buddha Eden Garden is a stunning creation set within the grounds of the Quinta dos Loridos wine estate in Bombarral, a Silver Coast town renowned for it’s wine making.

Within the beautiful gardens are numerous statues that pay homage to the great Bamyan Buddhas of Afghanistan, destroyed by the Taliban government ten years ago. The creator of this truly amazing garden, Comendador Jose Berardo was inspired by the loss of the statues that were considered priceless.

The phenomenal amount of work that has gone into the project has really paid off and the result is a 30 hectare garden where visitors are invited to stroll or sit and admire the magnificent works of art that are placed amongst the natural plants and mature trees.

The enormous statues are joined by a terracotta army and various other oriental sculptures which together with the immaculate lawns and impressive lakes make a truly peaceful setting for everyone to enjoy.

This is an unusual and magical place to visit during your holiday in Portugal, and won’t even cost you a penny. Admission to the garden is free and it is open everyday throughout the year.

Take a trip on the funicular railway up the side of the steep cliff in the Silver Coast fishing town of Nazare and in a couple of minutes you will find yourself in the pretty neighbouring town of Sitio.

The fabulous views of Nazare from Sitio’s main square take in the rooftops, the beach and go way beyond over the sea and the Silver Coast countryside – the views alone are quite enough to make the journey worthwhile.

But Sitio has much more to offer. . .

In pride of place, over looking the square is the beautiful church of Our Lady of Nazare. Originally founded in the 14th century the impressive building has had several additions and reconstructions over the years and today boasts an impressive façade with a Baroque portal at the top of a flight of semi circular steps.

But it is inside the church that is possibly the most memorable part of a visit. Above the altar, in a glass case and expertly lit, is a small statue of Our Lady of Nazare, which visitors are invited to study at close quarters. Following a passageway behind the altar brings you to a stone archway which leads to the elevated gallery where the statue sits. The ornate interior of this beautiful church also features some fabulous tiles by the 17th century Dutch ceramicist Willem van der Kloet.

The church was constructed to commemorate the Legend of Nazare, a well documented Silver Coast story about a knight who’s horse was about to plunge over the cliff top in pursuit of a deer but was saved by a vision of Our Lady.

The Medieval Festival, Obidos

The fabulous historic walled town of Obidos here on Portugal’s Silver Coast is well known for the lavish festivals and events that take place throughout the year within the castle walls – and one of the most popular, the Medieval Festival, begins tomorrow.

You could be forgiven for thinking you had travelled back in time if you visit Obidos between the 7th and 24th July, as the medieval theme is adopted throughout the town. The shops, restaurants, bars and cafes all take part with enthusiasm with many of the staff dressed in appropriate clothing and goods and services adapted to reflect medieval ways.

Ticket holders follow a trail along a narrow footpath and enter the castle grounds through a stone archway. Once inside you will find yourself amongst the townsfolk of a thousand years ago with inns and taverns selling food and drinks and market stalls crammed with all manner of goods. The theme for 2011 is Arts and Crafts so expect to see plenty of pottery, woodwork and metal work.

There are medieval games to play, displays and demonstrations and the spectacular jousting that takes place several times a day – remember to look out for the evil Black Knight!

The festival is open from Thursday to Sunday, 7th to 24th July, and tickets are available from the ticket office in Obidos. The cost is €7 for adults with discounts for children - and if you go along wearing medieval costume the price is reduced to just €3!

Foz do Arelho is a sleepy fishing village that sits in a simply stunning location at the mouth of the Obidos Lagoon on Portugal’s Silver Coast. The village has been a holiday destination favoured by the Portuguese for centuries and is now becoming more widely known to visitors from overseas.

Traditionally Foz do Arelho was considered a rather up market location and is still held in high esteem today. The evidence of the village’s illustrious past can be seen in the grand buildings that are located in the finest spots in the village. One of the most notable is the Quinta de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe a 16th century Quinta that features a beautiful chapel built in 1580.

Traditional Portuguese Markets on the Silver Coast

How about visiting a traditional Portuguese market while on holiday here on the Silver Coast? A noisy, colourful market makes a fascinating place to stroll around on a sunny morning and you may even pick up a bargain while you are there!

Probably the best known market in the whole of the Silver Coast is the daily fruit and vegetable market in the spa town of Caldas da Rainha. This is the only market in Portugal that is open every day of the week and is always busy with customers picking up the freshest produce at bargain prices.

Amongst the colourful stalls brimming with fruit and vegetables it is common to spot live chickens and rabbits – the unfortunate creatures destined for the pot.

Aside from food markets the Silver Coast has a number of general markets that include everything you could possibly need in the house, garden or farm. In addition to the daily market Caldas da Rainha has an impressive weekly market every Monday morning that sells everything from farm machinery and wine making equipment to clothes and kitchen ware. It is even possible to buy a cow bell or a copper still if you wish.

One of the things I always notice when visiting a Silver Coast market is that it is not simply the sights but the smells that make up the unique atmosphere. A regular feature of the weekly market in Caldas is the stall that sells home made Bifanas – delicious hot pork sandwiches which they make entirely from scratch. As his wife kneads bread in the back of the truck the husband cooks the pork steaks over a huge barbecue while chatting with the hungry crowd.

Silver Coast markets really do give you a taste of Portugal.

The Portuguese are justly proud of their cuisine as proven by the number of excellent restaurants that can be found here on the Silver Coast. An evening at any one of them is sure to be something you will remember long after you return home from your holiday.

There are many traditional dishes associated with Portuguese cuisine, and considering the maritime history and vast coastline of Portugal it is not surprising that the best known generally have a fishy theme.

Seafood is a popular choice for Portuguese diners and one of the favourite ways to eat it is in a Cataplana. Cataplana is the name given to both the dish and the vessel in which it is cooked, this is usually made of copper with a hinged lid and is said to be reminiscent of a giant clam shell. The Cataplana was introduced to Portugal by the Moors way back in the 8th century.

The recipe varies from kitchen to kitchen with some having been passed down through the generations. Aside from small peculiarities the recipe will include fish and seafood, tomatoes, onions, peppers and garlic along with slices of smoky Portuguese Chourico.

Nazare is a traditional fishing town on Portugal’s Silver Coast and one of the country’s most popular holiday destinations.

This lively town has a unique character that even includes a traditional costume worn only by the locals. The seven skirts, wooden clogs and headscarves worn by the Nazare women are a sartorial style that goes back centuries and can still be seen today - although usually only on the older generation.

The fishing industry in Nazare is still alive with boats leaving the harbour every morning to supply the local restaurants with fresh, tasty treats. Nazare also has a busy fish market which, even as a mere observer, is well worth a visit.

The local favourite is clearly the sardine, a delicacy that can be found on every menu in the town and also can be spotted laid out in racks on the beach to dry in the Silver Coast sunshine guarded by a small but fierce old lady who must be on first name terms with every cat in town!

A funicular railway links the main town and beautiful sandy beach of Nazare with that of its neighbour the smaller, but no less worthy, town of Sitio. Here you will find a beautiful cobbled square presided over by the grand Church of Nossa Senhora da Nazare along with a tiny chapel that commemorates a miracle that took place in 1182. It is said that the Virgin Mary saved the life of a knight by appearing just in time to stop his horse from following a deer over the edge of the cliff.

Portugal is well known for its rich cultural history and therefore the Silver Coast is the perfect place to come if you are looking for a holiday with more to offer than simply sunny days on the beach – although, of course, there are plenty of those to be had here on the Silver Coast!

The number of museums in the region is testimony to the Portuguese love of the arts and one of the most interesting I have visited is in the beautiful park in Caldas da Rainha.

The museum is dedicated to the Victorian painter Jose Malhoa who was born in Caldas da Rainha in 1855 and lived and painted on the Silver Coast until his death in 1933.

The museum was opened in 1940 and was, interestingly, the first purpose built museum in Portugal. Over the years the museum has been enlarged and extended and currently houses works by other artists in addition to the beautiful naturalist paintings of Malhoa.

The stunning coastline of the Silver Coast inspired many of Malhoa’s paintings as did scenes from local life, including ‘Fado’ probably his best known work.

The Jose Malhoa museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 – 12:30 and 2:00 – 5:00. The entrance fee is a very reasonable €3 with free entry on Sunday mornings.

Medieval Marvel at Obidos

Just thought I would share a few thoughts on our short visit to Obidos in June this year. I could tell from the approach to the walled castle that there would be quite a few visitors because of the number of tourist coaches parked up by the Aqueduct. Entering the castle walls, I could see why Obidos is a much visited place. We took some lunch at a restaurant we found on one of the lower streets, where it was slightly more quiet. After lunch, I got to speaking with one of the waiters, Hugo, about the history of Obidos, and he turned out to be rather knowledgeable on the subject. He also went on to tell us about the opera season only a few weeks away and how enjoyable the medieval festival was each summer. Enough for us to know we had probably visited a month too early. But then - what would the crowds be like in July? Would I really be up to that sort of challenge? Well- what the heck - one can only know from trying. Over dinner that evening, once again taken in the comfort and privacy of our villa and prepared by the chefs organised by the people at Portugal Holiday Rentals, we talked about returning to "Marvellous Obidos" the following summer and this time during the month of August so we might take in the festival and enjoy more of the lovely Silver Coast.

Beautiful day at the beach

Sunday 13 June 2010: Wow! what a day to begin proceedings. Sunny blue skies and light breeze. Woke up nice and early because we needed to get to the open air market at Santana which is a 30 minute drive away from the villa in A dos Francos. We had heard about this market from the little cafe down the road and they insisted we should go there and take a look. I am so glad we did because it was a real eye opener. Everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to garments, shoes, furniture, home furnishings, utensils, pottery, food stalls, garden centre wares, live cattle, used cars and electrical equipment were on sale at bargain prices. We spent a good 3 hours there, had a light lunch of Chicken piri-piri and salad, purchased some fresh bread from a mobile bakery, pickled olives, some ripe cherries and wine before heading out to the coastal town of Foz do Arelho for our first real outing in this serene paradise by the sea.
The beach was spectacular, huge and spacious with an enormous lagoon stretching inland for several miles. We set up camp towards the quieter end of the beach, so some of us might get in a spot of reading and then the obligatory snooze as a consequence of all that lovely red wine and sumptuous food taken earlier. No sooner had we taken repose, we could hear the flock of migratory birds as they swished overhead on their way inland to the other end of the lagoon. The guide book says there is a bird sanctuary at Paul in an area of wetland near the village of Arelho to the east.
Before long, with the gentle wind from the sea, I nodded off for 40 winks while the others continued to chat among themselves and enjoy some chilled beers. It wasn't till an hour or so later that I realised I was entirely on my own. It seems the others had just wandered off to the jetty nearby where some serious fly-fishing was in progress. I could see them a couple of hundred yards to my left. Beyond that I could also see the tops of some sail boats and some canoes bobbing on the water. To my right, as I looked out onto the ocean, I could see the wind surfers in action like little black specks in a tapestry of blue and white spray in a rhythm all their own. Across from where I was sitting, I noticed the far side of the lagoon that there was a beach the other side too. Just above the beach one could see the outlines of some buildings, perhaps some cafes or restaurants and beyond that rising upward into the hills and nestled amongst the trees, were some rather expensive looking houses in a private enclave. It was almost 6.00 pm and the beach volley ball was in progress to my right closer to the shops and the promenade. A bunch of fit young lads having fun and yelling at one another as they thumped the ball to and fro.
I was soon reunited with the group as we made our way back to the promenade for something to quench the thirst. A few drinks later, it was time to hop in the car and head home. When we got there, the smell of food coming from the kitchen was overpowering. We had organised to have a home-cooked meal served at the villa to celebrate Brian's 44th birthday. We quickly showered and freshened up to make it to the rear of the house to have some Chilled white port and a few other aperitifs before the main meal at 8.00 pm. Needless to say, the food was great - Freshly baked Pau bread served with sardine pate, goats cream cheese, garlic olives, green leaf salad followed by Fish soup and then Picanha da Brasa for the main course. All of this was kindly organised by the people at Portugal Rental Cottages.com at a modest cost of Euro €30.00 per head. They even did the washing up after. A befitting end to a lovely day.
